Why Use Water?

Water has been used as a method of pain relief for hundreds of years. Using water during labour can help in many ways. Support in water is one of the most beautiful things that can be offered to a woman in labour. Water provides a calming influence and a peaceful relaxed atmosphere. Women report that they enjoy their labour and find that the water allows complete freedom of movement, deep concentration and the added feeling of privacy.

Benefits for the Baby

Childbirth can be a strenuous and stressful experience for the baby. Properly heated water helps to ease the transition from the birth path to the outside world. The warm liquid resembles the familiar intra-uterine environment and also softens the light, colours and noises for the baby at the time of birth. Babies born in water are often more calm and relaxed at birth. It is not unusual for a baby born in water not to cry when it is born.

Benefits for the Mother

• Water birth is a form of hydrotherapy, which in studies, has been shown to be an effective form of pain management for a variety of conditions especially lower back pain (a common complaint of women in labour). Warm water on the lower back (which is the area of the spinal chord that receives the nerves from the lower abdominal region) can reduce labour pain.

• Full immersion in water promotes physiological responses in the mother that include a redistribution of blood volume, which stimulates the release of oxytocin here is evidence that immersion in warm water can lower blood pressure during labour.

• It is much easier to maintain active birthing positions in the gravity reduced environment of the pool.

• Water supports the mother reducing the pressure during labour.

• It has also been found that in water births the buoyancy of the mother and the baby allow for a gravitational pull. This pull not only opens up the mother's pelvis but also allows the baby to descend more easily.

Decreased Risk of Episotomy

Water birth is believed to aid stretching of the perineum and decrease the risk of skin tears. Support from the water slows down the crowning of the infant's head and offers perineal support which decreases the risk of tearing and reduces the use of episiotomy.
